The White Hart Inn
Lydgate — 51 Stockport Road, OL4 4JJ
The benchmark for food in Saddleworth, and by most measures one of the finest gastropubs in the north of England. Built in 1788, it's Michelin-recommended with an ambitious kitchen that has two AA Rosettes and is pushing for a third. The head chef's cooking is modern British and seasonal — produce-led without being precious about it. There are multiple menus across different dining areas, from a relaxed bar snack menu through to a full à la carte and a tasting menu in the Brasserie Dining Room. Do 3,000 covers a month in January, which tells you something. Booking is essential on weekends.
Must Order
Seasonal fish dishes, slow-cooked meats, raspberry parfait for dessert. The set menu is excellent value when available.
Vibe
Smart but not stuffy. You can come in post-walk with a dog and sit by the fire in the snug, or book the Brasserie for a proper occasion.
Gluten free available. The White Hart is listed as offering gluten free options and has been flagged as GF-aware by diners. The kitchen's focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients means there are naturally GF-friendly dishes on the menu. As with anywhere at this level, call ahead and speak to the kitchen directly about your requirements — they'll accommodate you properly.
